One issue people have had with their Mini-Z MA-010 AWD cars is that the
stock motor gets very hot (I personally think this also contributes to
the "lazy pinion" issue where the pinion connected to the motor will
just fall off mid-race). The motors on MR-01s and MR-02s don't
seem to have this issue probably due to the fact they are general more
open and get more air-flow to disipate the heat faster. The motor in the AWD is enclosed on all but 1 side.
Well after I got my Mini-Z AWD I wanted to make sure to get something
to resolve the hot motor issue. In addition to the "lazy pinion"
issue, too much heat is bad for your motor's performance and
longevity.
Fortunately, the Shop (shop.tinyrc.com) got a shipment of PN Racing
parts and included in this shipment was PN Racing's "Mini-Z AWD Alm.
Motor Cover with Heatsink" (Part # MA0111). I picked a blue one
and slapped it on my AWD for testing. Even before buying the part
I knew it was the motor cover w/ heatsink I wanted for several reasons:
1) it's metal 2) has a large heat sink area and 3) had "fins" that
pressed up against the motor. All of these things would help with
the heat disipation.
Taking the stock plastic motor cover off and installing the PN Motor
Cover w/ Heatsink was fairly straightforward. I was glas to see
the fit was very good and looked really nice on the AWD chassis..
Disclaimer: I don't recommend you do this as you could burn yourself
but after testing my AWD for about 10 minutes I picked up my AWD, took
the body off and touched the large heatsink on the side. It was
definately warm but not scorching hot. Comparing it to my friends
AWD who was running about the same time, his motor with stock platic
motor cover was very hot. I was very pleased with the PN Racings
Motor Cover w/ Heatsink heat disipation.
A couple things to note are with the bigger heatsink on the side of
your AWD you do have to be more careful handling your car after running
it for any period of time. I normally pick it up in one hand from both
sides of the chassis and this can result in a burn or "surprise! that's
hot!" situation were you accidently drop the chassis.
Additionally it seems to cost more than other AWD Allow Motor Covers w/
Heatsinks. Another thing is that it is harder to remove than the
standard plastic motor cover. And when removing it be careful not
to break any part of the plastic chassis if you are having a hard time
getting it off.
But even with these minor concerns I still highly recommend it.
